NewsGator Unveils Free Mobile Reader for iPhone

NewsGator Unveils Free Mobile Reader for iPhone: "

NewsGator Mobile for iPhone Provides Easy, Synchronized Access to Favorite
RSS Feeds, News and Information

July 24, 2007 - NewsGator Technologies, Inc., the leading RSS company, today announced the availability of NewsGator Mobile for iPhone, a free reader that complements the great design and interface of the iPhone. NewsGator Mobile for iPhone works in conjunction with any free NewsGator Online account.

With the addition of the iPhone reader, NewsGator continues to lead the mobile RSS arena with a broad set of solutions that not only provide an optimal feed-reading experience on a wide range of devices, but also synchronize with the full suite of NewsGator products including NewsGator Online, NetNewsWire for Mac, FeedDemon for Windows, and NewsGator business offerings such as NewsGator Enterprise Server (NGES), NewsGator Enterprise On-Demand (NGEOD) and NewsGator Syndication Services.

‘The beauty of NewsGator's new mobile-optimized, Web-based feed reader isn't just that it works well with an iPhone - it's that it syncs my subscription list, including which messages I've already read, with NetNewsWire on my Mac,’ said John Gruber of Daring Fireball, a top Apple-focused blog.

NewsGator Mobile for iPhone is now free for all users at http://m.newsgator.com and is optimized for the iPhone’s unique full-sized touch screen. The reader provides a streamlined reading experience specifically designed for the mobile user, and makes it easy to quickly access, read and mark feeds as read on the go. The simple login automatically detects the iPhone and routes the user to the iPhone reader, while directing other mobile devices to the standard, now-free NewsGator Mobile reader.

‘The iPhone provides a best-of-breed mobile experience that is in line with our focus on creating exceptional reading products,’ said Brian Kellner, general manager of consumer products at NewsGator. ‘In the tradition of NetNewsWire, FeedDemon and NewsGator Enterprise Server, we felt it was important to deliver a fantastic reading experience for the iPhone. At NewsGator, we are committed to developing new ways for people to easily and quickly access their favorite feeds, and we are inspired to deliver outstanding experiences on the iPhone so that people can have the power of information within their reach at anytime.’

Additional mobile products are available for RIM BlackBerry devices, Java-enabled and Windows Mobile-based smartphones and include additional features, such as clippings and offline reading, that aren’t part of the free NewsGator Mobile reader. The Final Word of Duke's Network Issues

Durham, NC -- A note from Tracy Futhey, Duke’s chief information officer, on Duke’s wireless network and Apple’s iPhones:

Campus News/Working at Duke

Computing and Technology
By now many of you have read news accounts around iPhones and Duke’s wireless network. Some of the reports incorrectly made it sound as if our entire wireless network had collapsed. Others made it sound as if the iPhone could not work correctly on our wireless network. Still others seem to imply that Duke’s network was deficient in some way because the problem had not been encountered more broadly. The reality is that a particular set of conditions made the Duke wireless network experience some minor and temporary disruptions in service. Those conditions involve our deployment of a very large Cisco-based wireless network that supports multiple network protocols.

Cisco worked closely with Duke and Apple to identify the source of this problem, which was caused by a Cisco-based network issue. Cisco has provided a fix that has been applied to Duke's network and there have been no recurrences of the problem since. We are working diligently to fully characterize the issue and will have additional information as soon as possible. Earlier reports that this was a problem with the iPhone in particular have proved to be inaccurate.

In closing, I extend my gratitude to the very strong technical staff within OIT that was able to identify this situation, working shoulder-to-shoulder with technical staff from two of our long-time partners, Cisco and Apple. Meanwhile, our Duke community should feel confident that both the Duke wireless network is fully functional, and the iPhone is fully operable within our environment

Vox Pop: To-dos on your iPhone?

Vox Pop: To-dos on your iPhone?: "

As noted by John Gruber and Living with Mac, the iPhone doesn’t currently appear to have built-in support for ‘to-dos’ — even the modest task support that’s built-in to OS X’s iCal. -(

While this is difficult for me to understand (I know it’s something I’d expect in even a Gen 1 smart phone), it’s cool to see that web- and Mac-based developers are stepping up to the plate in the absence.

A few of the apps I’ve seen so far (and in varying states of reality and vapor):

  • Ta-da Lists - The wonderfully simple app from 37 Signals has been quickly adapted into a lovely iPhone-friendly interface.

  • do.Oh - Boy genius, Ben Brown, has whipped together a snazzy looking chunk of func for basic task and list management.

  • @task for iPhone - Looks pretty sexy, but the site is light on info, pricing, and availability (without filling in a goofy form).

  • Nozbe — Announced, but I haven’t seen what this looks like yet. Supposedly coming this week.

  • OmniFocus - (Disclosure: I contribute to this project) - Although it’s still in very early and buggy development (even for an Alpha), our friends at OmniGroup were quick to add an HTML front-end to context view that can be served over your Mac.

I’m sure there are others that I’m missing (which I hope you’ll share in comments), and I know this is something that’s a priority for a lot of you proud new iPhone owners: What are you using to manage actions from your iPhone? What would a home run look like in terms of future, built-in to-do support for the iPhone?

'Push' E-Mail Service For iPhone Pops Up

Visto's Mobile product includes support for Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino.
By Elena Malykhina

Jun 28, 2007 01:00 PM

Visto on Thursday announced that its mobile e-mail service will work on the iPhone, giving users access to enterprise e-mail systems.
Apple's upcoming iPhone has been criticized for its lack of support for business applications. IT managers are likely to be put off by the idea of employees bringing in iPhones as their business smartphones. But Visto is hoping to change their mentality with its Visto Mobile service, which will let iPhone users access enterprise e-mail systems, including Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino.

"We saw a need for the iPhone to support corporate e-mail, considering its popularity and price tag. We think professionals would want to get their hands on one, both for business and personal purposes," said Joyce Kim, VP of marketing at Visto, in an interview . . . Read the article
