There have indeed been reports and pictures of burned Apple laptops, though I'm unaware of any exploding ones. The number of Dell machines vs. Apple laptops may have something to do with sheer numbers sold. Apple has indeed taken the high (and safer) road by voluntarily recalling these batteries, as has Dell. You point about engineering is well taken. I'll be following with interest what position Sony take through all this.
