Ancient Astronomical Computer Decoded

Ancient Astronomical Computer Decoded: "slimjim8094 writes 'A mechanical device from 150BC was found in a shipwreck. Upon examination with X-Rays, the device appeared to be a revolutionary computer used to calculate lunar cycles. This device 'is technically more complex than any known for at least a millennium afterward.' From the article 'The hand-operated mechanism, presumably used in preparing calendars for planting and harvesting and fixing religious festivals, had at least 30, possibly 37, hand-cut bronze gear-wheels, the researchers said. A pin-and-slot device connecting two gear-wheels induced variations in the representation of lunar motions according to the Hipparchos model of the Moon's elliptical orbit around Earth.'

Beatles Coming to an iPod Near You?

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Click on the iTunes music store and punch in "Beatles" under artist search. More than 50 albums will pop up, including Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Play the Beatles, but none are the real deal. Fans wishing to download the actual Fab Four in MP3 format have to search peer-to-peer sites like Limewire for unlicensed songs they can listen to free.

But that may be about to change. While details remain to be worked out, Fortune has learned that iTunes is close to a deal to bring the Beatles catalog online. Apple Computer (Charts) is said to be angling to become the exclusive online music store for the Beatles for a limited window of time. Other music stores, such as Microsoft's (Charts) MSN and Rhapsody, have courted the Beatles over the years to no avail, but it appears Apple is close to getting first dibs on the band's hits.

The Soul of A New Microsoft

For a slightly more gentle take on the Zune. -TG

The Soul of A New Microsoft: "BusinessWeek Online is running a front page story today about the new future of Microsoft. By 'looking beyond Windows', the company is utilizing fresh blood to come up with new products like the Zune, the Xbox 360, and various online sites. While the Zune probably isn't getting off to as successful a start as they might have liked, the article argues it's a positive sign that they're at least making the attempt. From the article: 'The point is that Microsoft needs to find its un-Vista. Several of them, in fact. The software giant is entering perhaps the greatest upheaval in its 30-year history. New business models are emerging--from low-cost 'open-source' software to advertising-supported Web services--that threaten Microsoft's core business like never before. For investors to care about the company, it needs to find new growth markets. Its $44.3 billion in annual sales are puttering along at an 11% growth pace. Its shares, which soared 9,560% throughout the 1990s, sunk 63% in 2000 when the Internet bubble burst, and they have yet to fully recover.'

The Best Windows Machine Is a Mac?

Mac Pro: the best Windows workstation available

If I weren't completely bedeviled with Apple's portables (I use both a MacBook and a MacBook Pro) I would a Mac Pro user. Richard Hoffman, writing for InformationWeek, has had his hands on a Mac Pro for 2 weeks and has one word to describe it: 'Wow.'

That's good.

He goes on to say that this machine is the best Windows workstation available, whether you are using Parallels or Boot Camp.

So, Mac Pro owners out there, are you happy with your Mac Pro?

It's About Time! (Or, Weather)

The Weather Channel widget and screensaver

I love the Weather Channel. There, I said it. I have a slight obession about the weather (though oddly enough I often do not wear weather appropriate clothing) and the Weather Channel has helped feed that obession for a long time. Now, I can get a taste of the Weather Channel right in OS X.

The good folks at the Weather Channel have released a widget and a screensaver that give you current conditions based on a zip code. The widget (pictured to the right) also has a 3 day forecast, as well as links to the 10 day forecast and Doppler Radar.

High Flying iPods

Apple cues up iPods on a planeApple Computer is in negotiations with six airlines to provide in-flight integration for the iPod.On Tuesday, Apple announced a partnership with carriers Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United. Beginning in mid-2007, the six airlines will offer iPod connectivity so that travelers can charge their iPods in transit. Additionally, the planes' seat-back displays will be configured so that video content stored on the media players can be viewed on them.Apple has also said that it will be collaborating with Panasonic Avionics to bring similar functions to more airlines. While this is the first time that Mac maker has pushed for iPod connectivity in airplanes, accommodating the devices in cars is nothing new. In August, Apple announced deals with Ford, General Motors and Mazda to make many of the auto manufacturers' 2007 models iPod-compatible.It is not yet clear whether the in-flight integration will be compatible with older, pre-video iPod models.

Wireless iPod Dock

wiDock - wireless iPod dock from Silex announced

Rumors of a wireless, syncing iPod have existed almost as long as the iPod itself, but next week Silex Technology is poised to introduce the next best thing: the wiDock. This wireless iPod dock will fulfill the much-requested feature of wirelessly syncing media with a Mac or Windows PC, all while remaining connected with audio and video output to your entertainment center and charging the iPod's battery for the ultimate in do-it-all connectivity. The wiDock uses 802.11b/g to work its wireless magic, and to top things off, it plays well with the Apple Remote.

We don't have a word on price yet, but the wiDock should be arriving in retail stores soon in time for the holidays.

Great Browser Goes on Sale

I nearly choked on my own excitement when OmniWeb was finally universal, and it seems The Omni Group is making one last push to send me to an early grave: For the month of November, they're offering OmniWeb for a nifty $9.95 -- $20 off the original price.

I know what you're thinking: Why pay for a browser? Because, my friend, it doth rocketh. Workspaces, thumbnail tabs, advanced auto-saving features, site-specific preferences, super-speed...uh...pretty icon...etc.

If you've never used OmniWeb, I suggest giving it a try before November's end; you may like it, and if you do, now's the perfect time get that license.

A Gift from Uncle Steve

All Apple employees getting an iPod shuffle morale booster from Uncle Steve

AppleInsider says that Steve "Santa" Jobs is handing out a 2nd generation iPod shuffles to all Apple employees from execs on down to retail staff as a token of his affection morale booster. One can't help but wonder what kind of morale boost one expects to get with a mere $79 incentive, but it's the thought that counts, right? In all seriousness, I do think it's a cool move and I am sure it is much appreciated by the recipients. Then again, given Apple's problems with theft in the company store, perhaps this is just a preemptive measure to ward off sticky fingers?

Employees have been told to expect their gifts before the end of the month, even though the iPod shuffle officially hit stores today. Expect many of them to end up on eBay within minutes of receipt.
