New Apple Commercials Air in Canada

TUAWer Connor let us know that he was able to upload two Get a Mac commercials that are airing in Canada (though not in the US, as of yet). The ad pictured to the [left] features the Mac talking about getting some work done, while Counseling depicts the PC and the Mac trying to see eye to eye with the help of a counselor (it doesn't go well).

iMac Sporting 802.11n?

Core 2 Duo iMacs sporting 802.11n cards?

Well, what have we here? Since the IEEE taskforce apparently can't make up its mind about a final 802.11n protocol, some manufacturers have (understandably) just rolled out products based on the current draft(s). An eagle-eyed user has reportedly spotted one such wireless card in a less-than-expected location: within Apple's newest iMac. While booted up into the latest version of Windows Vista, the built-in network adapter was recognized as being of the "Broadcom 802.11n" variety -- not exactly the 54Mbps version we all expected to see. While we aren't certain if there's really a draft-spec card under the hood -- especially since OS X is fairly adamant that it only supports 802.11b/g -- Windows Vista is either uncovering a subtle secret (iTV to support 802.11n?), or else its a bit too sauced up to be taken seriously.

Apple Unveils New Store Design

Apple is unveiling a new store design that will focus more on iPods and its Macintosh line, giving more show room space where customers can get technical help with their products, reports Bloomberg. Among the new features off the redesign will be an "iPod Bar" and a studio for artists to give advice to customers on creative projects. "The new design puts twice as many Macs and iPods on display and should speed customer service, said Ron Johnson, Apple's VP of retail operations in the report." Bloomberg goes on to note that the stores will be modeled after Apple's Fifth Avenue Store.

A New OS X Utility

Jim Mitchell has released Yasu 2.0.2, the latest version of his maintenance utility for Mac OS X 10.4. Designed to be a quick first line of defense for solving Mac OS X-related issues, Yasu was originally developed with System Administrators who service large groups of workstations in mind, enabling them to perform a specific group of maintenance tasks quickly within a few clicks, rather than typing shell script commands in the Terminal application. This release removes all Keychain-related functions in response to a potential bug that could corrupt a user's login Keychain, and is a recommended update for all users. Yasu is provided as "Donationware."

This is a MUST Read

As you probably know, Apple’s been in the news quite a bit lately. (That’s “lately,” as in, “pretty much every other month for the last five years.”)
Nowadays, Apple is a media darling. The critics like the company’s direction, and so does Wall Street.
But it wasn’t always so. This summer marked the tenth anniversary of Apple’s lowest point–a time in 1996 when the company’s profits and products were hitting bottom. (Steve Jobs’s return to the company he founded was still a year away.)
Not only was Apple NOT a media darling, it was the dog the media loved to kick. The analysts and columnists were amazingly confident that Apple would not live out the year, let alone the decade.
With a little help from the Lexis-Nexis database of all articles from all major publications, it’s my pleasure to present, for your nostalgia pleasure,
some of their predictions from ten years ago:

Saving Money of .Mac

Dotmac06
With each update to the Mac OS, Apple seems to add more integration and functionality with their .Mac service. Even if you don't use it for email, the ease of publishing iPhoto and iMovie projects to the Web, syncing your bookmarks and other information between different Macs with iSync, backing up critical data off-site with Backup or just being able to drag-and-drop copy to your iDisk makes it a worthwhile investment.

Even with all that, though, sometimes the $99 price tag can be a bit difficult to justify, especially if you have more than one .Mac account. However, there's nothing that says you have to pay full retail.

Amazon recently cut their price on the boxed version .Mac 4.0 to $79.99, or $20 off Apple's retail price of $99.95, with free shipping. Since you already have all the software installed on your machine, just log in to your .Mac account and use the included code to update your subscription. Voila! You just saved $20! (More if you do this for multiple accounts).

Caution: There are a couple other vendors offering .Mac for less, but they include shipping charges. Even selecting the least expensive option doesn't meet the Amazon price. When comparing, be sure to calculate it out to the bottom line before making the purchase

EmiratesMac Sets A Fast Pace with Unique Promotion

Emiritesmac
A few weeks ago we told you about EmiratesMac, the first Mac User Group in the United Arab Emirates, that was just getting started. Well, that was then, this is now, and EmiratesMac is fast out of the gate.

Magnus Nystedt, one of the group's founders told The MUG Center that is group has just been approved as an Apple-recognized group. Not bad for just a couple weeks as a MUG.

But more interesting and unique is the fact that they are promoting the group in very unusual fashion. One of their members, "iDubai," will be participating in the Gulf Radical Cup high performance car series, and has agreed to have the EmiratesMac logo displayed prominently on his car's front fenders.

Not content with that, the group is arranging to have as many members as possible present, all wearing EmiratesMac shirts and hats to both support their car and promote the group as well.

When was the last time your group's logo went whizzing by at over 100 mph?

You can see all the details, including a mock-up of the Radical car with the EmiratesMac logo, on the EmiratesMac web site.

One size fits all. The new Shuffle

Indexsleeveguy20060912

You know what they say about good things and small packages. But when something 1.62 inches long and about half an ounce holds up to 240 songs, “good” and “small” don’t quite cut it. Especially when you can listen to your music for up to 12 continuous hours.(2) In fact, iPod shuffle just may be the biggest thing in small.

Movies On Your (New?) iPod

Capbottomitunescomp20060912

Though Apple may have had more evolutionary than revolutionary announcements, I for one am still excited to see the steady progress being made in hardware and software. The new version of iTunes rocks! I absolutely love the new iPod manager window and the new organization scheme. And who doesn't love the new Album view and Cover Flow view?! Of course, I'm waiting now for people to start blogging about how Apple has once again taken someone else's ideas and incorporated them into its own software... -TG

"Now that you can buy movies from the iTunes Store and sync them to your iPod, the whole world is your theater. With a 30GB or 80GB iPod in hand, those movies fit comfortably next to TV shows, new iPod games, podcasts, audiobooks, photo albums, and, of course, an entire library of music — up to 20,000 songs, in fact. Now starting at $249, iPod is a pocket-size prodigy."
